Homelessness has become a crisis in Tampa. When this crisis affects someone, they start living in survival mode and the light at the end of the tunnel starts to dim. We walk with our neighbors and face this crisis together, providing friendship, prayer, physical resources and partnerships with landlords.
In 2015 we opened the Petra House. This is a home for women and children that are at risk of homelessness.
In addition to Petra House, we also work with others at various stages of homelessness or potential homelessness. Assisting with locating affordable housing and developing budget skills to avoid eviction. We also develop relationships with landlords with the goal of affordable housing for our clients. We act as a liaison between landlords and our neighbors to make this possible.
Education often makes the difference in the trajectory of a life and the following generations. We are advocates children in the public school system and assist parents in navigatin gthe complexities of it. We walk alongside the children in our neighborhoods in getting them registered for school and in their studies with a homework club and with one-on-one tutoring. We also tutor adults for GED testing and assist them as they pursue further education.
We desire to see all of our neighbors working at the capacity they are able. There are a large number of barriers between some of our neighbors and a job. Education, transportation, child care, experience, clothing, internet, and the list continues. We walk alongside our neighbors to find creative ways to earn income, to network with employers and to start micro-businesses. All to help overcome barriers and create opportunities and restore dignity.
